Established in 1951, IOM is the leading inter-governmental organization in the field of migration
and works closely with governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental partners. IOM
is dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all. It does so by
providing services and advice to governments and migrants.
Context:
Madagascar is a Member State of the Organization since 2011. The activities conducted by IOM
have until 2014 evolved primarily around the preparation of the National Migration Profile and in
the provision of assistance to vulnerable migrants. In October 2014, IOM and the Government of
Madagascar (GoM) have signed a cooperation agreement that lead to the opening of a
permanent representation of the Organization, and that opened way for the development of
migration-related programmes in the field of capacity building, provision of technical advisory
and consulting services on migration-related issues such as migration and health, international
migration law, migration and the environment, awareness raising on migration,
counter-trafficking, the immigration of nationals, and assistance to displaced persons both within
and outside the country.
Currently IOM Madagascar implements projects and activities in the field of Counter-Trafficking;
Labour Migration; Diaspora Engagement; Migration, Environment, and Climate Change;
Immigration Border Management; and continues to provide assistance to vulnerable migrants,
and technical advisory to national stakeholders on migration governance.
Core Functions / Responsibilities:
Under the direct supervision of the Head of Office, the Intern will be tasked to assist him in the
preparation and implementation of the activities and programmes led by the Country Office. In
particular, the Intern will be in charge of:
- Provide support to the Head of Office, and to the other staff members in the Administration and Programme Units in the implementation of their daily tasks;
- Assist in the preparation, the organization, and the facilitation of workshops and other meetings held by the Country Office in the implementation of its activities and projects;
- Participate in technical meetings, working groups, workshops, and other coordination meetings related to the implementation of IOM activities, and/or to IOM’s partnerships with the GoM, civil society, other United Nations (UN) agencies, or the diplomatic corps;
- Prepare notes, background documents, and talking points on topics that related to activities implemented by the Country Office;
- Assist in the development, promotion of- and fund-raising for the Country Office Strategy 2017 – 2020 with GoM and donors in Madagascar;
- Lead the day to day implementation of the Country Office communication strategy;
- Perform other duties as may be required.
Required Qualifications:
Education:
• University degree in Political or Social Sciences, International Relations/Development, Law or
a related field.
Experience
• A work experience in an inter-governmental setting with focus on project development, project
management, project monitoring and evaluation, or communication and advocacy.
• Experience and familiarity with migration-related topics.
• Advanced French and English writing, communication and negotiation skills.
• Ability to quickly and effectively collect, analyze and present data.
• Computer/software literate, preferably knowledgeable in Microsoft Office.
• Experience working in a multi-cultural setting.
Languages
Fluency in French and English is required. Working knowledge of Malagasy is an advantage.
